Community Food Ministries
Saturday Community Fellowship Meals
Alternating with groups from Faith Lutheran, First United Methodist, Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and the Elks organization. The meals are offered each Saturday, 11:00a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Central Avenue, Coos Bay. Our Gloria Dei group cooks and serves on the second Saturday of each month. We research recipes and plan the meals and our team assists with the preparation, serving and clean up. A free will offering is collected, but the majority of our food expenses are from Grants. Although attendance at our monthly lunches varies, this past year we have seen an additional decrease as a Saturday Breakfast Program gets them going. We have had a variety or patrons this year, ebbing and flowing with their needs. Our Saturday meal ministry is a blessing for everyone. The guests are always appreciative of the special menus and our group is pleased to serve. We wear our Gloria Dei aprons and t-shirts, pleased to represent our congregation in the community.
Loneliness and isolation in older adults can lead to dramatic decreases in physical health, mental well-being and overall quality of life.
Open to all seniors, especially those who are often home alone.
Transportation can be provided for shut-in seniors upon request. If transportation is needed please call one week ahead, Church office or Connie at 541-217-1866.
This event will repeat every fourth Friday of each and every month!
The meal is free, yet donations are gladly accepted.
Please call the Church office 541– 267-2347 or Connie 541-217-1866 for more information.
WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) meets monthly during the school year around the theme of "Who Is Our Neighbor". Although the name of the group indicates "women", this group welcomes all people. We are pleased to have men join us each month as well as many people from the community who are not members of Gloria Dei. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch each month put on by the WELCA Kitchen Team and a speaker from the community about needs and services. We have learned a lot about who our neighbors are in this community and how we might go about working with them.
