Daily Devotional for Thursday, February 27, 2020

Wondrous Love provides a devotion for each day from Ash Wednesday to the Vigil of Easter, (traditionally known as Holy Saturday). Devotions begin with a brief passage from the Gospel of Matthew. The writers then bring their unique voices and pastoral wisdom to the Matthew texts with quotations to ponder, reflections, and prayers.

May God’s wondrous love be with you during this Lenten season as you walk with Jesus and live into your baptism.

Daily Devotional for Thursday, February 27, 2020

Matthew 3:11, 13

[John said,] “I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire…” Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him.

To ponder

Christ is baptized, not to be made holy by the water, but to make the water holy. Maximus of Turin, “Sermo 100”

Water is thicker than blood

All water is connected. Just think of it: in a sense every drop of water on earth ran over the body of Jesus as John baptized him. I think Jesus would love it if we could remember that all people are connected too. Water is thicker than blood.

If you attended Ash Wednesday worship, you probably heard about fasting, one of the disciplines of Lent. Fasting is choosing to go without something – alcohol or chocolate, swearing or trash-talking our neighbor. We are all connected to Christ, and by our baptism into Christ we are connected to one another. So perhaps a fast of more substantial nature is in order. What might it be like for God’s people to fast from discrimination and prejudice? What if we fasted from our usual way of thinking about others who are not like us, and prayed for God’s wisdom in seeing all people as beloved children of God?

Lord Jesus, we praise you for your baptism that makes all water holy and calls us to new life. Help us by your grace to see the value in every human being, and to understand more fully that we are all siblings with one another and with you. Amen.
