What is a Labyrinth?

Is it just a big maze?  A labyrinth is an ancient tool used for prayer and meditation in most religions throughout the world, dating back 4000 years.  The Christian church began using labyrinths during the Middle Ages.  One of the most famous was built on the floor of the Chartres Cathedral in France in the second decade of the 13th century.  This still survives today.  The labyrinth started making a resurgence in the 20th century.

The labyrinth is not a maze.  A maze has dead ends and tries to trick you.  A labyrinth is a path.  A sacred path.  The path is a metaphor for our spiritual journey.  You can use the path as a form of active prayer.  A walking prayer.
