Interns at Gloria Dei
Gloria Dei partners with Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, to host a third year seminary student as an intern every year. We started as an internship site in the fall of 2009 and are blessed to have Sam Kost with us this year. Sam will return to Wartburg Seminary on August 10th and we will welcome intern Alyssa Weber on August 23rd.
My name is Alyssa Weber. I grew up in Aberdeen, SD. My parents are Rick and Deb. My Father works for FedEx Express, and my mother is a Respiratory Therapist at Avera St. Luke’s in Aberdeen, SD. I am the oldest of four children; I have one sister Tori and two brothers Eric and Christopher. I am a relatively young person, as I will be 26 years old upon beginning my time as an intern. My significant other’s name is Jared, he currently lives in Oak Dale, MN; we have been seeing one another for over a year, there has been talk of marriage, but rest assured that will not happen until after internship.
I completed my Bachelor’s of Arts degree at Augustana College (now Augustana University) in Sioux Falls, SD. I majored in Religion and received minor degrees in classics, philosophy, and ancient language.
After finishing up my time at Augustana a semester early I volunteered at Sanford Medical Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD shadowing their chaplains; doing my own visits and rounds. At this time I was also working as the Assistant Christian Education Director of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, helping to execute the programing, which we created each month.
On August 1st, 2013 I began my position as Pastoral Assistant of Zion Lutheran Church, in Aberdeen. It was my joy and honor to serve the people of Zion alongside Reverend Marcia Sylvester. In this position, I assisted with worship, preached, visited shut-ins, and those in the hospital. I supervised Zion’s Education Committee, Social Concerns Committee, Youth Committee, and the Prayer Shawl Ministry. As well as assisted with the day-to-day care for the people and programs of Zion. It was during my time at Zion that I completed a full unit of CPE in the local hospital. I learned much about life and caring for others during that year. I ministered to several patients and their families as they transitioned from life to death.
I am very excited to be completing my internship year in 2016-2017, I have already began to pray for you and for all members of the congregations that will support me and that support any intern!
Peace to you in Christ,
